Menopause Support – Find Calm, Sleep & Confidence
My Story of Surgical Menopause — How Life Changed Overnight
“At 40, a late diagnosis of cervical cancer led to Brachytherapy — life-saving, but also life-altering. Overnight, I entered surgical menopause.
Unlike natural menopause, which can unfold gradually over years, surgical menopause is instant. Hormones don’t slowly adjust, they drop sharply and the mind and body feel the shock. I was not prepared for what followed:
• Sudden, intense hot flushes — heightened by stress
• Overwhelm that appeared without warning
• High anxiety with no clear explanation
• Restless nights and disrupted sleep
• An inability to switch off or quieten my thoughts
• Constant overthinking until I was exhausted
• Mood lows with no obvious trigger
Many of these symptoms were outside of my control and visible to others. That only amplified my confusion, embarrassment and loss of confidence.
I became hyper-aware in every situation. I felt like I was shrinking into myself. I had become a stranger to myself.”
Why Menopause Affects the Mind and Body
During menopause (and especially during surgical menopause) the body’s natural oestrogen production drops significantly. Oestrogen is not only a reproductive hormone. It plays a vital role in:
• Brain chemistry
• Mood regulation
• Sleep cycles
• The stress response
A sudden hormonal shift can disrupt key brain regions, including:
• The hypothalamus (which regulates body temperature)
• The amygdala (which processes emotional responses)
• The hippocampus (linked to memory and learning)
This is why menopause symptoms can feel mental, emotional and physical — all at once.
